Global Origins: A Journey Through the World's Finest Tea Gardens

From the misty mountains of Kyoto to the sun-drenched slopes of Darjeeling, discover the terroir and traditions that make our teas exceptional.

Why Origin Matters

Just like wine, tea is a product of its environment. The soil, climate, altitude, and even the morning mist all contribute to a tea's unique character. This concept—known as terroir—is why a green tea from Japan tastes completely different from one grown in China, even if they're made from the same plant species.

At Herbai, we source directly from artisanal farms in the world's most renowned tea-growing regions. We've built relationships with families who have been cultivating tea for generations, ensuring that every cup you drink carries centuries of expertise.

Kyoto, Japan: The Art of Shade

🇯🇵

Uji Region, Kyoto

Known for: Matcha, Gyokuro, Sencha

The Uji region of Kyoto has been producing exceptional tea since the 12th century. What makes Japanese tea special is the meticulous care that goes into every step of production. Our partner farm, run by the Tanaka family for seven generations, practices "kabuse" cultivation—shading the tea plants for weeks before harvest.

This shading process forces the plants to produce more chlorophyll, resulting in that distinctive umami flavor and vibrant green color that Japanese teas are famous for. When you drink our Ceremonial Matcha, you're tasting the result of centuries of refined technique.

Darjeeling, India: The Champagne of Teas

🇮🇳

Darjeeling, West Bengal

Known for: First Flush, Second Flush, Muscatel

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas at elevations reaching 7,000 feet, Darjeeling produces teas so distinctive that the name is protected by geographical indication—like Champagne or Parmesan. The cool mountain air, heavy rainfall, and mineral-rich soil create conditions found nowhere else on Earth.

Our Darjeeling comes from the Makaibari Estate, the world's first tea factory, established in 1859. Today, it's run as a biodynamic farm, where the health of the soil is considered as important as the quality of the leaf. The result is a tea with incredible complexity—floral notes, a hint of muscatel grape, and a finish that lingers long after your last sip.

"Tea is not just a beverage; it's a connection to a place, a people, and a tradition. Every cup tells a story of the land where it was grown."
— John Teasip, Founder of Herbai

Yunnan, China: Where Tea Began

🇨🇳

Yunnan Province

Known for: Pu-erh, Dian Hong, Ancient Tree Teas

Yunnan is where the tea plant originated, and some of the trees here are over 1,000 years old. These ancient tea trees produce leaves with unparalleled depth of flavor—there's simply no substitute for a millennium of root development reaching deep into mineral-rich earth.

We work with small-holder farmers in the Xishuangbanna region, where families still hand-process tea using methods passed down through generations. Our Dian Hong (Yunnan Red) comes from these farms—a black tea with notes of honey, malt, and dried fruit that has to be tasted to be believed.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sourcing from these regions isn't just about quality—it's about responsibility. We pay fair prices that allow farmers to invest in sustainable practices. We choose organic and biodynamic farms whenever possible. And we limit our carbon footprint by shipping tea directly from origin rather than through multiple intermediaries.
